For decades Monticello hid Jefferson?s mistress. Now the estate is making room for Sally Hemings.

The Founding Father, who wrote in 1776 that "all men are created equal," was the master of a 5,000-acre working plantation. Over the course of his life, Thomas Jefferson owned 607 slaves. A $35 million restoration of the Charlottesville site will showcase their lives.
