Through at least five joint ventures, Robert Mercer, daughter Rebekah and Stephen Bannon aimed to sow distrust of big government and erode the dominance of the major news media. Among their projects was Breitbart News, the media outlet the Mercers now partly own. Under Bannon's leadership, Breitbart gave voice to the nationalistic fervor that Donald Trump embraced.
