The "bomb cyclone" blasting the East Coast lays waste to car batteries, water mains, rail lines, arthritic joints and our own fortitude. "This is what you expect in Iowa for goodness sakes," the general manager of the Washington Aqueduct said of the long stretch of frigid weather. "Nothing has a chance to warm up to defrost itself."
